PS3 Slim is REAL!

According to Playstation Lifestyle, the PS3 Slim is REAL! Its identity was denied by Sony, but all the rumors were out there. And now it has been confirmed!

Expect it...next year? Who knows. All we hope is a price cut with its release. Seriously, we need a price cut. Kenji Matsubara, CEO of Koei Tecmo and Activision boss Bobby Kotick want one, and let's not forget the gamers!

Ubisoft: the next step?

As the 3rd independent publisher worldwide, the 1st independent publisher on the DS, the 3rd on the Playstation 3 and Xbox360, and the 4th on the Wii, Ubisoft is no small studio! What started as a small independent studio back in 1986 in France is now a multimillion selling company!

With game franchises like Rayman, Prince of Persia, FarCry, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Beyond Good and Evil, and Call of Juarez, and responsible for PC ports like Resident Evil 4, they define generations of gamers. They also represent an evolution when we take a look at their games. They have always invested in new technologies as soon as they came out, not waiting one bit to move to the next generation.

Not limited to video games, they moved to the film business with upcoming video games adaptation like Prince of Persia and Citizen Siege. Ubisoft acquired back in 2008 Hybride, a production studio specialized in special effects for cinema.

They also represent different cultures, with studios in France, but also Montreal (Canada), Australia, Romania, Singapore, India, Shanghai and more! At times where other game companies (for example: EA) are forced to cut down production budgets and jobs, with the worldwide economical recession, it's a miracle how they still stand.

With their upcoming critically acclaimed title Assassin's Creed 2, already on everyone's radar for the fall season, and very well received at E3 and accross the globe, what else could they possibly do? Surprise us of course. Ubisoft recently announced the opening of yet ANOTHER game studio, this time in Toronto, on July 6th 2009.

This studio "is expected to result in the creation of 800 net new jobs within the province over the next decade. The government of Ontario is investing CA$263 million over ten years in the company and Ubisoft’s net investment will be over half a billion CAD in the new studio, which will begin operations in late 2009." according to their press release. “Today’s announcement marks a strategic move for Ubisoft as we continue to expand our internal development force,” said Yves Guillemot, president and chief executive officer at Ubisoft.

The press release goes on saying that the new studio will work on Triple-A-games and will be involved with the cinematographic business.

Let us wish them luck with their expansion, and expect great things in the months to come!

Don't forget that we are moving to our new home!

[Review] BlazBlue : Calamity Trigger

BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is the newest 2D fighting game from Arc System Works, creators of the Guilty Gear series, the developer is noted for creative character designs , fast- paced action and anime themes. BlazBlue has been heating up the arcades, now BlazBlue is released on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Anime-style!
As I popped in the disc for Calamity Trigger, the anime themes were immediately sensed. The music, the art design of the backgrounds and characters all have the unique anime feel that fans of the Guilty Gear series will feel right at home with. The character design in BlazBlue should be applauded as every character looks, feels and plays differently from one another in comparison to other fighters with archetypes for characters with cookie cutter controls and fighting strategies. Jin Kisaragi freezes people with his close attacks while has projectiles and close attacks while Carl Clover uses a life size doll as his weapon creating for two characters on screen to use against your opponents. Needless to say, characters in BlazBlue are distinct and offer variant strategies that are needed for success in this break neck speed fighter.

Easily the highlight of BlazBlue is not the fighting system but the gorgeous 2D visuals. The game is easily the best looking 2D game I have ever seen as you need a HDMI cable and HDTV to truly enjoy the visuals supplied by Arc System Works. The backdrops differ from gorgeous 2D drawings to fully rendered 3D backgrounds. The colors are vivid, lush and jawdropping. The graphics are so stunning that during battles I get distracted by the lush backgrounds of each level.

BlazBlue has pretty standard fighting game modes ; story, arcade, versus, online, training, and an art gallery to view cut scenes. During story mode, the story of BlazBlue unfolds during still cutscenes / text / voice acting, all of which is quite HORRIBLE. In fact the story and story telling medium is easily the worst part of the entire game. The voice acting is horrible and the stills look as if they should be in a SNES game. Story mode should be avoided unless you want every trophy/achievement the story mode should be skipped at all cost.
Freeze!
The stand out feature for the actual gameplay is easily the drive feature. The drive feature is an integral tool in dealing the pain to your opponent. The drive feature from my experience is inteded to be used as a chain in between to combos to turn an ordinary 5 hit combo to a 10+ combo. For example , Jin Kisaragi drive is to freeze opponents as soon as they are hit, it can be chained with his throw or any special moves to unleash huge combos. The drive feature adds enormous depth to a game with unique characters in which strategies differ for each, so execution of the drive feature will be different for EVERY character, so practice with different characters.

The game is Guilty Gear for next gen consoles... which is not a bad thing. The music fuels the intense action, the anime based characters are unique and over the top while the visuals, anyone will enjoy. However, due to the complexity of the drive feature and non-recognizable characters, new comers will shy away from trying BlazBlue. It is clearly not a fighter one can pick up and easily master, it takes time to understand how to use just 1 character , let alone the other 11 characters. 2D Fighting game enthusiasts owe it to themselves to pick up this title to add to their collection. It is by no chance a Street Fighter 4 killer but it is a solid game if you liked the Guilty Gear series.

Red Faction Guerrilla REVIEW

The perfect game does not exist, mostly because everyone has their vision of what the perfect game would be. Therefore, no one should qualify a game of being perfect, or even close to perfect. That is my rule when reviewing, and I think it should be yours too. That's how I see it at least.

That was until I played this game. I am so sorry, but I will be breaking my rule today: Red Faction Guerrilla is damn near perfect! This game is not only awesome in so many ways, it uses old and new to deliver a perfectly balanced package with pretty much everything expected today and more. Needless to say it is now one of my favorite games, next to Halo 2, Final Fantasy VIII, Tales of Symphonia and System Shock 2. Why is it awesome? Let's find out!

Yep, that's Alec!

The story begins with Alec Mason, as he lands on Mars, a human colony, ready to start a fresh life on this so called haven. He is greeted by his brother who quickly dismisses this, and explains that Mars is EDF (Earth Defense Forces) ruled, and that they pretty much own the place. You then discover he is part of a rebellion who wants to be free of the tyranny and get Mars back. After a violent encounter with police forces, he gets killed and Alec joins the rebellion, swearing to avenge his lost brother. And this is where you start. Pretty classic if you ask me, but solid premises nonetheless.

Is this not beautiful?

A big part of the game is about destruction. You have to complete story missions, and side quests, that usually involve you destroying EDF buildings. To do that you start with a sledgehammer (and trust me, even if that's your starting weapon, you won't be letting go of it till the end of the game!), and remote mines. Throughout the game, you can spend salvage (which you get from ruins and missions) on upgrades and new weapons. This ranges from proximity mines to rocket launcher to an assault rifle and much more, but I don't want to spoil it. To get to a mission, you can walk or drive there, at the same time exploring this wonderful open world environment that is Mars. Follow the road, or go off course and be careful not to crash! It really seems like whatever the game has you doing, the developpers found a way to make it fun.

Before...
...after!

The game runs on the Geomod 2.0 engine, which handles all the explosions from every single bit of debris to beautiful detonations. And boy does it do a great job! It simulates real life physics pretty well: if you start damaging the bases, the whole building will collapse. The engine is also responsible for the landscape (red desert, roads, rocky mountains). Being an open world game, you will often be driving around the different parts of Mars. You do have a fast travel option, but trust me, driving is fun, especially when you can get into any car you see! The engine does a pretty good job, and even though the graphics are not groundbreaking, they will never hurt your eyes (Prototype anyone?).

Sometimes, you gotta be sneaky..

"So all you do in the game is destroy stuff?". Well, no. A lot of missions involve intercepting convoys, getting to a destination driving as fast as you can, rescuing hostages, and even some form of stealth action! Trust me, this game does NOT bore you. Amd just when you thought you had seen it all, they surprise you!
------SMALL SPOILER CONCERNING ONE OF THE UPGRADES-----

I mean come on, when you least expect it, you get the choice of...a jet pack! I mean how cool is that. I love it, really gives a different take on destruction.

------END OF SMALL SPOILER CONCERNING ONE OF THE UPGRADES-----
The game features a GTA like police system, where instead of stars you have a color code, going from green (everything's fine) to red (EDF sent out helicopters and tanks!), and sometimes it gets pretty chaotic, but good chaos, not bad chaos. And if you are out of ammo, there usually is a weapon cache not far from you where you can replenish your inventory. That or pick up any weapon on the ground.
The game also shows you the occupation level, which goes up or down depending on your actions.

"So what, is this game perfect? Should I buy one for each member of the family?". Well, you should definitely buy it, that's a no brainier, but it's not perfect. There are some small details that came to my attention JUST BECAUSE I was really looking for cons and could not find any after a while.
One of them is the fact that if substantial amounts of debris happen to be falling on you, and you get hit, Alec will of course fall on the ground. But he has a very weird way of doing it. It's like the game cut the chords holding you up, and you suddenly drop in a very "I have no muscle nor bones" way. Even though getting up does not take long, it's not automatic. The same thing sometimes happens if you get ran over by a vehicle, but like I said, this is a small detail.

Another one I guess you could be bummed about is the story/voice acting. It's decent, the dialogues even have some humor to it, but when you see a white guy talk with a very guetto accent, you just stop and wonder "Did he really speak like that?" and the answer would be yes. But then again, those are details. Those elements will not make the game less enjoyable.

Notice the yellow arrows? They act as the ultimate GPS System! And as you can see, the game alternates day and night

After all of that, it really seems like there's nothing more to add. BUT WAIT: Red Faction Guerrilla has one more thing, multiplayer!
Yep, that's right, you can either duel your friend offline and see who can cause more destruction in the time given, or battle it out online with oh so many people. And thank god, the notion of lag seems to be absent from this game, and this is always a major plus.

I honestly think this game should get a Game Of The Year Edition, because it really deserves it. On behalf of the team here at Freestylelance, I thank Volition and THQ for delivering such a complete product. With 3 DLC announced for both 360 and PS3, the first scheduled to be released before the end of summer, expanding on the single player story with a totally new area to explore, all I can say is: the rebellion is not over! And with a Red Faction 4 announced, all I can think about is a map editor!

Appreciations: A, 9/10, Awesome.

Bioshock 2 now has another developper

Looks like Bishock 2 is being developped by 4 different studios! Already on board are 2k Australia, 2k Marin and Digital Extremes, but according to the Arkane Studios website, seems like they are the latest addition!

Here is what Alyssa Finley, producer at 2K Marin, says about Arkane’s contribution to the game :

“BioShock 2 is a world class project led out of 2K Marin that features involvement from a variety of premiere studios from around the world. In the past we’ve been working closely with 2K Australia for our tech needs and Digital Extremes for our robust multiplayer experience. Today I’m proud to say that we’ve added another important developer to the mix. Under the direction and leadership of 2K Marin, Arkane is assisting in the creation of levels that embody the aesthetic and gameplay ideals that make BioShock such a unique and exciting experience”

Sounds awesome if you ask me, more polish!

Open World Gaming: the new trend?

Fallout 3

GTA IV, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV, Red Faction Guerrilla, InFamous, Prototype. Apart from being awesome games, what do they have in common? They are HUGE. As in physically. All these games have a common component that really adds to the overall experience, and that is an open world. Why are more and more games featuring open world environments? Is this the new 2009-2010 trend? And what does it mean for the future of gaming? Let's take a look and see!

With the arrival of next gen consoles like the XBOX360 and the PS3, not only do they bring new graphical capabilities, features like WIFI and a better online gaming system, but they also have a power processor. Microsoft's Xenon (consisting of three sinlge core processor) and Sony's Cell (often seen as more powerful but more complicated to work with) have enourmous processing capabilities. They can process more information, faster.

That enables Game Studios to make bigger games, litterally, the main obstacle now being the size of the format (that is, untill the studios reach the limit of the processors, but we are not there yet!). The XBOX360 has the DVD format, and the PS3 has the bigger Blueray. You would think that with more space there would be more things, but all the games cited in the introduction are multiplatform (except for InFamous).

So great, you say (or not say as far as I know), the studios have better processors and bigger formats to work with. Why are not all games open worlds? And what is an open world anyway? Well let's define what that is first.

Red Faction Guerrilla
An open world game is a video game that features a big environment where the player is free to move wherever. If you take a game like Eternal Sonata, some of the levels are huge, but that is not an open world game. You can not run around in dreamland. But games like Fallout 3 that have cities that you can go to; or Red Faction Guerrilla where whenever you want to go to the far end of Mars, all you have to do is drive there, now that's an open world. It's pretty much the ultimate simulation of freedom of movements right now. You want to go to that place you see in the background? Then go!

Infamous
But an open world has to bring something to the game. For example in InFamous, the PS3 exclusive title by SuckerPunch (the makers of Sly Cooper), Empire City is a huge place to visit. The city is divided in three parts that all become accessible at some point in the story. But it's not grandure for gandure's sake! The people walking in the city react to you. That and pretty much every mission involves you climbing on tall buildings. The same for Protoype, where climbing up to the top of skyscrappers is a good way to escape tanks! And as for good games, they usually mean no or few loading times. Missions and story events start by physically going to the locations, whether it's walking, driving or fastporting there (Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls)!

So what, should all games be open world, and have that sense of freedom? Now that's just according to your own personal opinion, but I think not. I don't feel like Splinter Cell should be open world. How does the stealth element work with that setting? Or games like Bioshock, or RPGs are awesome experiences without the need of a big environment.

Upcoming game: The Saboteur
What does that mean for the future of gaming? Well, when you look at upcoming games like The Saboteur by Pandemic and EA, that takes place in World War II Paris, looks absolutely stunning. They need to fake the capital of France, and size helps a lot. And since it features GTA mission-like gameplay, the choice seems to be justified even more. The new installment of the Halo franchise, HALO ODST also has an open world component. You will be roaming the city, looking for your lost mates, therefore enhancing the feeling of actually 'looking' for someone and rescuing that person.

As you can see, Open World gaming now being a very feasible reality, and our consoles hardware making it possible, I think we are going to see more and more games like these. But the question will now become, who makes the best use of it? And that, dear readers, is a question YOU will answer.

What's coming up?

Great articles are coming up!

Uncharted 2 Preview

Uncharted 2. You probably heard about the hype surrounding the game. Let's take a close look at the sequel to the critically acclaimed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, on the PS3.

If we had to define Uncharted with one word, it would be pretty hard to choose. That's why I decided to pick more than one!

-Action: this game is about intense action. Ranging from gunfights in the city, to running away on top of a train, to being chased by trucks in narrow streets, or by helicopters for that matter. This game has it all! The trailer even shows a wagon tumbling as the result of an explosion, about to fall on Nathan Drake (the hero)!!

You will be picking up various weapons from pistols to snipers and rocket launchers, to a propane tank! There is also a hand to hand combat component where, depending on the enemy's size, it will be easier, harder or impossible!

-Locations: since Nathan Drake is kind of a male Lara Croft, in the sense that he is after treasures, you will be traveling all over the place! From South America to jungles to snowy mountains! And what does this mean?

It means graphical power! While the first game only used 30% of the processing power of the PS3, this one was designed to use the maximum possible. The landscapes really look great, the characters too. In a recent interview with Evan Wells, the producer, he said : "[Uncharted 2] will have the prettiest snow you’ve ever seen in a game!”. The snow will be real like, slowing your movements among other things. This game is on point with its graphics!

-Gameplay: or should I say gameplays! It has it all: cover/shoot style like Gears of Wars, stealth elements so you can play it sneaky, but also platform and puzzles where you will have to stop and think for a bit. If you ask me, this sounds like an amazing crossover. The length of the game is supposed to be long too, with OVER 90 MINUTES OF CINEMATICS! Now that is awesome.

-Multiplayer: well, this really was the only thing left here, and Uncharted 2 has it. With online coop, or even deathmatch, capture the flag-style, and other unrevealed game modes, with trophies supported, what else can you ask for?

As someone who played the closed beta, I can say that there is no lag whatsoever, the game is very fluid. Hiding, taking cover, jumping, are all actions that are very fluid and easy to manipulate.

-Story: The story is not one that is expected. Although linear, the interactions between the characters, with humor or drama, make the game very alive. You will be laughing with Nathan in no time, and really relate to the game.

In conclusion, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves should be in everyone's preorder list if you own a PS3. When I think about it, you can summarize this game with one word: FUN.

PS3 Valve Games?

Valve has been at the center of many controversies in the past months. From a Left 4 Dead 2 boycott by the people owing the first game, claiming lack of support (one year only after the first episode, sequel is ready??). But also since Valve publicly announced that they will not produce games for the PS3, saying that "it is too complicated" and "they want to focus on making great games".

Well guess what? Looks like they changed their mind. In a recent interview with Joystiq, Valve's Lombardi said that "we have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys [...] and get the quality out of the box and offer the same support post-launch on that platform, as well."

Well, looks like an apology to PS3 fans from what I understand ;) PS3 coders, prepare your resumes ! Let's make Left 4 Dead a reality !

PSP GO Faster Processor

A lot of people think that the PSP GO is a rip off. The main features presented at the E3 were the lack of UMD, replaced by downloadable games. Well guess what: there is more.

Turns out the PSP GO has a faster processor than the current PSP: up to 40% more! (source). What does that mean for gamers? Well, better looking games for sure, and faster loading times or internet browsing too, but improved battery life is also a possibility.

Seems like Sony is sending a clear message here: we are the main destination for gamers, in terms of portability, competing iwth an upgrade DS (DSi) and iPhone (iPhone 3Gs). Let's see if the game line up is worth it in the coming month.

The PSP GO is scheduled to be released on October 1st 2009 worldwide.

Tekken 6 Preview

Tekken. Just hearing that name can bring back memories from a long time ago. You either played the demo on those old demo discs they had back in the days, or you played a game at a friend's house. Or you own a game or four!

Highly seen as one of the best fighting game ever made, the sixth installment is set to be released on October 27th, for 57 dollars for the console versions and 40 dollars for the PSP one (according to Amazon.com).

What new things can we expect from this game?

-Great new graphics! I mean look at this. I can't say that it uses the PS3 to the max (when we see screenshots from Heavy Rain) but it sure looks great!

-New characters (as in every new fighting game). But this time, there are NO locked characters. From the moment you buy the game, you can play with anyone you want! Now that's pretty cool.
-A whole new game mode looking like a hybrid of a fighting game and beat em all, playable alone or with a friend. Adding that to the online component and the length of the game is greatly increased!
-You can buy the game, or pre-order a collector pack!

So you have the choice to get this awesome pack: you can get Tekken 6 Limited Edition with a Wireless Fight Stick Bundle, an art book, a calendar and a hooded sweatshirt!!! You will be playing arcade style with the buttons and the stick, which are entirely customizable. I personally love it. The price is a bit high though (150 dollars on Amazon.com), but I guess the fans will close their eyes on it.

I think this should be a must get when the fall comes, as the fighting game of choice. I am getting BlazBlue Calamity Trigger soon, so I will tell you how that goes. But Tekken 6? A MUST.

PS3 Store update

Check out this link to see what's new in the store today!

I am happy to see that Capcom is releasing classics like Final Fight. I used to love that game so I'm happy I can play it!

A surprise is Punisher: No Mercy, "a brand new PSN-exclusive first person shooter, in which the players face off against other players locally and online, in addition to a single player mode. Four maps will be available at launch alongside various game modes." Interesting. Let's wait and see how it catches on!

RUMOR

Rumor of a the PS3 offering full PS2 compatibility for all models, coming in the future? Stay tuned as the story evolves!

Heavy Rain

The upcoming game Heavy Rain (by Quantic Dream) is on everyone's radar as the next big thing in terms of video game.

Many people are intrigued by the story driven element of the game, where you control different character's fates, and therefore change the story each time. When one character dies, you switch to the other one. Life goes on. It seems like each run is different from the other! This of course should be viewed carefully, we have not seen a game that truly is different each time you play it, even though people claimed it before.

Another thing that is really amazing is the graphics. The studio hired hundreds of people, and using motion capture technology, recreated crowds that are used in the game. They also did something very innovative where they use their technology not only to simulate real life body movements, but also faces! The emotions are really captured as we can see at the E3 gameplay demo. When they are angry, when they cry, it really looks like the most advanced graphical representation of real human beings, and that is not overstating it.

From what you can read, the game looks too good to be true, so where is the snag? That would be the actual gameplay.
Because the game is story centered, with a third person view, this is not about picking up weapons or hiding a la Gears of Wars. The developpers decided to implement QTEs (quick time events), where, in the mist of the tension, you have to push certain buttons to do certain actions. From what we have seen in other games, this is interesting at certain times, when you least expect it. But throughout the whole game?

No worries, because from what we can see from videos, the QTEs look more like ever changing interactive controls, depending on the situation. You won't be just smashing the triangle button. It's more like you will have to move the stick to the right, and press one or more button to be able to do something. And if you do it too hard or too slow, you might fail and have to look for something else. The actions look diverse and not limited to "press triangle 5 times". We would still have to try it to really appreciate it, but I have confidence in Quantic Dream's ability to make a great game. (Anyone remembers Fahrenheit ? Very innovative).

So, in conclusion, this is a title to look forward too. Very innovative, the story looks really good (different characters who lost someone they loved, a serial killer called the Origami Killer, drama at its best!), and the graphics are awesome.

Astroids the movie???

Universal acquired the rights to make an Asteroids movie. WOW. How can you make a movie about a game that has no story? I guess they will have the ultimate freedom as to what it will be about.

Let's just be glad it is not Uwe Boll making the movie. :)

Red Steel 2 Q&A, DJ HERO priced (yikes!)

Hey people!

Red Steel 2
Ubisoft decided to answer questions about their upcoming sequel to the "Red Steel" game. The first opus, on the Wii, was kind of a missed shot if you ask me. But with the Wii Motion Plus, looks like they improved it a lot! The set of questions was answered by Jason Vandenberghe, Creative Director; and Stephane Bachelet, Artistic Director.
Check it out!

DJ HERO
DJ Hero got a price tag! According to Eurogamer and Gamestop, it will cost $120 with the turn table, and 108 pounds in the UK. So, are yo going to get it? The stores selling it decided to lower the price in the UK though, saying it was too high for their customers. Can you blame them...
Sure acting like a rockstar is fun, but a fake turntable? I don't know about this..

Today's news

Today's highlights:

Uncharted Movie:
According to a live chat on the official PlayStation Blog, "Uncharted the Movie" has been in the making for a year and a half, and the development team is very involved in the process. I think we can expect a movie that stays true to the experience of the game! (BTW: A new multiplayer demo will soon be available and open to the public!)

Red Faction Guerilla:
DLC (downloadable content) is on its way for the new hit multiplatform game. Three addons will soon be available, with the first one adding on to the single player experience! "The first of which - "Demons of the Badlands" - will feature a single-player mission arc that takes place in an entirely new Mars landscape outside of the existing expansive world." The price tag? 9.99 which is not that bad compared to some other addons. This is a story to follow.
